{TIPS} Getting the most out of a button revamp......

As many of you have probably gathered I kind of have a thing for buttons. I collect them, I use them in craft projects, I revamp tired or plain items of clothing with buttons and more. I guess you could say I'm a little button nut.

But through my crafty and revamping endeavours I've started to develop some opinions and thoughts on how to get the most out of your revamped clothing pieces and other projects with buttons. Some of the following tips might seem obvious but they truly do make a difference.

Tip 1: when considering a revamp with buttons on a piece of clothing, try contrasting coloured buttons to your garment, to give it pop and new life.

Tip 2: don't be afraid to try several different coloured buttons, as long as the buttons compliment one another it's okay for them to contrast with fabric colour.

Tip 3: an item of clothing that has never had buttons like plain white tee, can be revamped with a shower of carefully chosen buttons over the shoulder or through the bust area.

Tip 4: always check that your buttons your revamping with fit through buttonholes, sometimes (and especially with some vintage buttons) they are thicker and may be a tight squeeze through existing buttonholes. You don't want to go to the effort of replacing buttons for them not to fit or cause damage with a stretch buttonhole.

Tip 5: when revamping also consider using a complimentary or contrasting thread colour to the buttons, to give your new piece more edge.

Finally my biggest tip.
Tip 6: take care with applying your buttons, if you have a four hole button attach the button with an "X" never a square. Likewise with two hole buttons ensure the holes are horizontal or vertical, not wonky. These two tips alone when followed along with using contrasting thread will give a LOT more of a polished revamped look to your piece.

Simple tips, but it's all about attention to detail and what will take a revamp job from looking like a half effort into a piece that people mistaken for funky little boutique buy.

  1. Oh, I'm a button nut too Trudie. Seems like everyone loves them now and they cost a fortune at the op shops. I'm lucky I've got quite a collection from Mum and my Nanna.

  3. Great tip, thank you. I think the same applies to replacing the knobs on cupboard doors.
I found this through Thriving on Thursdays. I have linked in bacon and scrambled egg rolls. Have a great week.
