So I've been doing a bit of laundry lately. Well I do it every day. But what I mean is I've been busy trying to launder some old, delicate and special items with staining. As a lover of vintage pieces and op shop buys there is often the very cheap purchase made in the hope of a little love and elbow grease removing a stain to make a special piece more wearable or useable. I hate to see those pieces sitting on racks not being purchased because people are fearful of stains and not being able to get them out and wasting their money.
So I have a little tip I learnt, or came by, I can't remember how I stumbled upon it, but nonetheless it's worth sharing with you and giving you an easy as tutorial/DIY.
Take a laundry soaking agent, anything like Nappisan (no this is not a sponsored post, just a point of reference) or other nappy soaking agents. Heck you could even try your regular washing powder if you use powder.

Place stained item in laundry tub with a good heaped cap full (1/2 a 3/4 cup) of laundry soaking agent in cover item with warm water.
Let soak for a few hours or even over night. Depending on what I have soaked I have even soaked it for a good day or two. However items with delicate embroidery should be handled with care, embroidery thread colour can start to bleach out. So you can always try this method over short intervals. Perhaps and hour at first.
After item has had a good soak drain water from laundry tub, wring your item out delicately but only enough so the item isn't totally dripping water everywhere. You still want it to very wet as this is a crucial part to this laundry tip working.
You won't be washing the garment yet. Take your item out into the full direct sunlight and lay on a towel. This is where the magic happens, the left over laundry agent in your garment or item and the chemical reaction caused by the sunlight will work extremely effectively at helping to better bleach out stains.
Once item is fully dry you can then wash in the machine, with more powder or soaking agent if you wish. If you're concerned about laundry agent build up run the rinse cycle more than once if necessary. Then dry your garment as normal.
I have used this tip to great success, I can't vouch however for its success on every type of fabric and material and every type of stain. But it is certainly worth a try, if you really fancy a piece and the dollars you're going to part with for it are minimal. If there is still another possible revamp of a garment to be turned into another item if this process doesn't work and you're still with a stain, you're still going to be in front if you're a bit handy with a needle and thread or machine.
So give it a go and let me know if you have much success and if you saved a special piece.
